The Society for Art Collection held its maiden exclusive art colloquium on the 17th of February, 2020. It was held at the Wheatbaker Hotel, Ikoyi. The event had prominent art collectors, artists, and VIPs in attendance.
The theme of the colloquium was ‘exploring a new and informed approach to art collection’. Prof. Chike Aniakor, an erudite art scholar and prominent art historian, delivered a very detailed and unforgettable lecture on the theme. He made key points about how art collectors should approach collecting, presenting a critically well-structured framework for this. He kickstarted his talk with the history of collecting and spoke to through the annals of time, revealing the various art eras where significant strides in art and art collection were made.
The event was graced by the Executive Governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Mr. Godwin Obaseki who is also a dedicated Art Collector. He spoke extensively about the importance of preserving our artistic culture and heritage, using the stolen artworks from Benin in the 1800s as a reference point. He commended the governing council of the society for putting such an event together. The president of the Society, Dr. Okey Anueyiagu, thanked His excellency for taking time off his busy schedule to attend the colloquium.
