Nsikak Essien was a renowned mixed media and experimental artist who graduated from the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu in 1979 with a Distinction in Painting and as the Best Overall Graduate. He retired from lecturing at his alma mater in 1991 to concentrate on full-time studio practice. Essien was a great artist who demonstrated a deep and uncanny insight in his works, amazing creative imagination, and the ability to bring his vision into manifestation. He juxtaposes his religious beliefs and symbols with other imagery to create masterpieces. He was a great friend to our President, Dr Okey Anueyiagu during his time at the University of Nigeria while Essien was at IMT Enugu. The pair had a great love for Rock Music and the Arts.
In 2003, Anueyiagu presented six Nigerian artists in London in the famous African Passage exhibition in collaboration with Pointec Group and Barclays Private Bank. The artists featured were Nsikak Essien, Ndidi Dike, OnyemaOffoedu-Okeke, Obi Ekwenchi, Sam Ovraiti, and Tony Enebeli.
